Balloon payments reduce the monthly instalment but leave a final amount to settle, refinance or trade against. Keep the balloon conservative if the vehicle may lose value quickly.

This tool is for planning only. Banks may calculate fees, insurance, initiation charges, linked rates, affordability and settlement values differently.

New vehicle sales are improving, but affordability still decides the deal

Market figure Reported value
2025 full-year new vehicle sales 596,818
2024 full-year new vehicle sales 515,850
May 2026 new vehicle sales 51,071

May year-on-year change +12.8%

How to use the market context

More market activity may mean more stock movement, but it does not make every deal affordable. Your monthly cost still depends on the vehicle price, deposit, trade-in and settlement, interest rate, contract term, fees and balloon payment.

Test the same vehicle at zero balloon, 10%, 20% and 30%. Then compare the instalment with take-home pay, normal living costs and the final balloon amount before you speak to a dealer or bank.

Figures are based on naamsa media releases and are market context, not a prediction of prices, interest rates, stock availability or credit approval.
